Overview
Jellyfish Monthly is a children’s magazine project involving editorial illustration, visual storytelling, and publication design across multiple issues.
The work focused on translating diverse editorial content into clear, engaging visuals while maintaining consistency in style, tone, and readability for a young audience.
My work as art director on the magazine was for the first six issues. I continued working on it on illustrator and consultant for the later part of the work.
Visual Language
The visual style is minimal, expressive, and character-driven. Simplified forms, bold outlines, and controlled color palettes ensure clarity in print while keeping the illustrations engaging and accessible.
Consistency across characters, proportions, and color usage was key to maintaining a unified identity across issues.
Art Direction
As Chief Designer, I defined the visual direction of the magazine and ensured consistency across all contributions.
This included creating guidelines for illustration and layout, directing contributing designers, and reviewing work to maintain quality and coherence.
Character and Mascot Designs
Characters were designed to be instantly readable and expressive. Gesture, posture, and facial expressions were emphasized to communicate emotion and intent quickly.
The designs remained flexible to work across different contexts and narratives within the magazine.
Short Story Illustrations
The project included conceptual visuals addressing different stories across the various issues. Story-driven content was structured into clear visual progressions, helping readers follow events and ideas intuitively.
Editorial Design & Layout
I designed and assembled the magazine using Adobe InDesign, structuring content across pages while maintaining visual balance and readability.
Layouts were built using consistent grids, typography systems, and spacing to accommodate varied content types across issues.
Print Production and Coordination
I handled the complete pre-press workflow, preparing print-ready files with correct bleed, margins, and color settings. Files were delivered in production-ready formats to ensure accuracy in the final printed output.
Worked directly with the printing team in Chennai to review outputs, resolve issues, and ensure color accuracy and layout fidelity in pri
Outcome
The project established a consistent visual identity for the magazine while making editorial content more accessible and engaging for young readers.
It involved end-to-end ownership—from concept and illustration to layout, direction, and final print delivery.
